Religious Diversity at School

This volume features chapters by international experts in education, sociology, and theology who consider a range of challenges faced by educators in primary and secondary schools that are becoming increasingly diverse in terms of the ethnic and religious backgrounds of pupils. From the non-religious, to the refugee, to student fundamentalism and even radicalization—these multiple, fresh approaches analyze the dynamics of the changing pedagogical landscape in an age of ever increasing globalization and cultural plurality. Today’s classrooms are often the most crucial spaces where children and adolescents encounter new cultural, religious, and other worldviews. Increasingly, teachers are called on to empower their pupils with the tools and competencies necessary to reflect on and process this plurality in ways that are productive for their intellectual growth and moral maturation. Regional case studies provide extensive data while offering insights into developments in school settings across Europe, in Turkey, and in the United States. In addition, a number of the contributions address the delivery, content, and policies of Islamic Religious Education in European contexts, the educational strategies employed in multi-religious societies, and interreligious dialogue in schools, whether intentional or spontaneous.

Religious Identity and the Problem of Historical Foundation

The essays collected in this book deal with the question how, throughout the history of Christianity, Christian communities have tried to construct their identity by anchoring their views in authoritative and normative sources. The main focus is upon the problem of historical foundation through textual traditions but other authoritative sources ( role of religious leaders; ritual traditions) are taken into consideration as well. The book takes as its point of departure the fact that with the rise of modernity the former dependence of western church and society on authoritative sources was called into question. Ever since, appeal to such sources is no longer self-evident; at times it is even regarded as problematic. Based on this radical change brought about by modernity, the book is divided in two main parts. The first part deals with the question how Christian churches and confessions ( Roman-Catholic and Protestant) confronted modernity and which role was played by authoritative sources in the tradition to the modern era. Special attention will be paid to the way in which Judaism reacted to many of the same impulses, both societal and religious ones. The second part deals with the premodern period, from early Christianity to the post-Reformation era, and focuses on the role authoritative traditions, textual or otherwise, have played in providing various Christian communities with a relative stable identity. The aim of the book is to elucidate processes resulting in the formation of authoritative traditions as well as the effects of these traditions on the identity of Christian and Jewish communities. In addition, the book attempts to clarify the various ways in which Christian and Jewish communities have reacted to the growing suspicion authoritative traditions aroused in the western world since the rise of modernity.

Walaupun teks Al-Quran lahir di masa yang jauh dengan masa hidup manusia (baca: penafsir) seperti masa kini, tetapi teks itu dapat dikontekstualisasikan di berbagai tempat dan kondisi seiring dengan perkembangan zaman. Iutlah sebabnya Al-Quran dikatakan salih li kulli zaman wa makan (relevan untuk segala situasi dan kondisi). Salah satu jalan agar manusia dapat berdialog dengan teks Al-Qur'an adalah dengan menafsirkannya. Meskipun menafsirkan Al-Qur'an tidak mudah, tetapi jika para pembaca tekun dan ulet melakukan dialog, Insya Allah kesulitan itu pun akan sirna. Dialog pendidikan yang didasarkan pada ayat-ayat Al-Quran bukanlah yang pertama kali dilakukan. Namun demikian, nuansa penafsiran akan 'terasa" jika setiap saat para pembaca Al-Quran melakukan refleksi atas bacaan yang telah dilakukannya, sehingga bacaan-bacaan tersebut senantiasa terasa dinamis. Hai inilah (dinamisasi) yang akan ditemukan para pembaca sekaitan dengan penafsiran ayat-ayat bertema pendidikan pada uraian buku ini. Hal ini pun sekaligus sebagai pembeda dengan buku-buku sejenis lainnya.
