Jalaluddin Al-Suyuthi berkata, "Disepakati bahwa Asy-Syafi'i adalah peletak batu pertama ilmu ushul fikih yang lengkap dan independen. Dia orang pertama yang menulis ilmunya secara tersendiri." Imam Ahmad bin Muhammad bin hambal menyatakan, "Dulu, fikih itu terkunci pada ahlinya saja, hingga kemudian Allah membukakannya dengan Asy-Syafi'i." Demikianlah, melalui kitab Ar-Risalah, Imam Asy-Syafi'i telah meletakkan pondasi pertama penulisan dan kodifikasi ilmu ushul fikih, menjelaskan ketentuan-ketentuannya ini serta memperjelas gambarannya. Di dalam Ar-Risalah, Imam Asy-Syafi'i berbicara tentang Al-Qur'an dan penjelasannya. Dia pun mengemukakan bahwa banyak dalil mengenai keharusan berargumentasi berdasarkan Al-Qur'an dan As-Sunnah. Imam Asy-Syafi'i menulis Ar-Risalah dengan teliti, mendalam, setiap pendapatnya didasarkan dalil, dan mendiskusikan pendapat yang berbeda secara ilmiah, sempurna, dan mengagumkan. Sehingga kitab Ar-Risalah ini menjadi rujukan penting para pakar dan ulama. Siapa pun yang membaca dan menelaahnya, maka dia akan mendapatkan ilmu dan wawasan luas dalam kajian fikih. Imam Al-Muzani (salah satu murid Imam Asy-Syafi'i) pernah mengatakan, "Selama lima puluh tahun aku mendalami kitab Ar-Risalah, dan setiap menelaahnya, aku mendapatkan tambahan ilmu yang belum kuketahui sebelumnya." Kaidah Fikih menempati posisi yang sangat penting dalam kajian hukum Islam. Kaidah fikih adalah salah satu dari empat pilar penting dalam hukum Islam. Kaidah fikih merupakan kumpulan dari sekian banyak masalah fikih yang dapat memberikan kemudahan bagi para ahli dan praktisi hukum Islam dalam melakukan proses penetapan hukum. Dengan demikian, kaidah fikih dapat dijadikan salah satu acuan berpikir (kerangka teoretis). Sudah cukup banyak buku yang membahas tentang kaidah fikih dan menjadi pegangan mahasiswa, khususnya mahasiswa fakultas Syariah, namun yang menjelaskan secara detail mulai dari konsep, sejarah, perbandingan hingga implementasinya kaidah-kaidah fikih baik asasiyah atau kaidah fikih umum dan khusus terbilang masih langka. Buku yang berjudul “Pengantar Kaidah Fikih” ini dapat dibaca oleh para mahasiswa fakultas Syariah di sejumlah perguruan tinggi di Indonesia.
